Prop 37: The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act

It's Time For Change

"It's been a long, a long time coming, but I know a change gonna come." Sam Cooke

My son Dominic watched the film Food Inc in Environmental Studies last week. I am not opposed to eating meat. I eat meat. But there is no doubt we are in desperate need of a Food Revolution. I didn't learn about the state of our food industry until I was a sophomore in college. I was lucky to have a Prof. of Sociology who showed us films about the tragic way meat is handled. That inspired me to become a vegetarian for six years. I am hopeful that if we are teaching our children the truth at an impressionable age, they may have the courage to act. And all schools need to get on board, especially the schools in lower socioeconomic areas. The baby boomers are not going to act on this. After all, they grew up on TV dinners and fast food. The children of the baby boomers likely won't act either. So it will be the grandchildren of the baby boomers (my kids ) that will have the ultimate responsibility of leading the Food Revolution. Our kids are eventually going to understand that our food is causing heart disease, the number one killer in America. It is causing Type II diabetes, a totally preventable disease. It is causing cancer. It is causing an array of autoimmune diseases. And it is causing the obesity epidemic that is affecting both adults and children alike. It is burdening our economy and destroying our planet.

Fortunately, we have the power to change all of this. One small step in the right direction is to VOTE YES on PROP 37.

What is PROP 37?
1. It requires labeling on raw or processed food offered for sale to consumers if the food is made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specific ways.
2. It prohibits labeling or advertising such food as natural

What are Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs)?
A genetically engineered food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature and is experimental. Many of the foods we currently eat and feed our familiies (including certain baby formulas and a high percentage of corn, soy, cotton, and sugar beets commonly used in processed foods sold in the U.S.), but we don't know which ones without labeling.

Are Genetically Engineered Foods Safe?
A recent study published in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology found that Monsanto's herbicide RoundUp and the genetically engineered corn and soybeans that it is used on (dominating the US market), caused tumors and liver and kidney damage in rodents.  The study also found excess tumors and organ damage in rats fed only the genetically engineered corn.

First of all, you have the right to know what's in your food. Labeling genetically modified foods will provide you with the information you need about foods that some physicians and scientists say are linked to allergies and other significant health risks. Over 40 countries around the world require labels for genetically modified foods.

Labeling genetically modified foods is a small step but an important one. Because we have done nothing to stop this tragedy from happening, we have left this great responsibility to these kids. None of us have had the courage to do what these kids will need to do. What is it going to take for us to stand up and say that we refuse to be poisoned by our own food supply? When will we stand up to Monsanto and ConAgra and the other food giants simply by refusing to buy their toxic products? When will we hold the government responsible for this disaster? We are going to have to admit to our kids that we didn't have the courage to create change; however, I choose to believe that change is going to come. Take the first step. VOTE YES ON 37. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW AND SO DO OUR KIDS.
